We purchased 3 tickets on a Catamaran to Isla Mujeres.
This is what was sold to us, a relaxing catamaran across the Gulf of Mexico.
The tickets were relatively cheap for an all-day boat trip with an open bar, snorkeling, parasailing and lunch included – but we were in Mexico and were proud of ourselves for negotiating the price down.
We arrived to the dock and could see that between the 4 different boats we were definitely surrounded by a specific crowd. We didn’t make it on the “boobs cruise” but we were definitely on the “booze cruise” of the company’s boats going out that day.
This is what we got:
There are two reasons why I not only didn’t mind being on the booze cruise, but actually enjoyed it.
- You can’t go wrong with rum punch and an occasional margarita. Good…and good!
- Really great people watching.
What to Expect on a Cancun Booze Cruise
Amazingly blue water. We couldn’t believe how many different shades of blue in the Gulf of Mexico.
Crowds. This isn’t a luxury cruise where you have enough space to lounge around. It will be a packed catamaran with l-o-u-d music to keep the party moving.
Snorkeling. Keep your expectations low for snorkeling. We stopped with about 6 other catamarans as all 300 of us jumped in the water on the same schedule. I am sure any sea life that was down there quickly swam away when they heard all of us coming. People were screaming, yes screaming, while they snorkeled. Don’t ask.
A Great Tan. You are out in the sun for a full 8 hours at least. Bring sunscreen to protect your skin but also you can relish in the fact that you will come back sunkissed and tan.
Isla Mujeres – Most day cruises from Cancun take you to Isla Mujeres where you spend an hour shopping around the small stores in the town.
Food. After an hour of shopping, you will most likely be starving for lunch. Expect a full buffet of options from traditional Mexican food to chicken fingers and salad. Load up, your stomach needs to compensate for the 20th rum punch you’ve had today!
Lots of Fun. The music is loud and usually is set to repeat the most popular upbeat songs of the year. Get to know everyone on your cruise and it will make for more laughs throughout the day. Of course this isn’t going to be a highlight of your travels, but everyone is usually ready for a good time aboard a booze cruise in Cancun.
If the winds are right the crew will put up the sail, which was probably our favorite part. Sit back and sail away!

It might get interesting, if we see it as an anthropological experiment… 🙂

Looks like fun! Booze cruises are really not my normal travel style, but every once in a while it’s nice to step outside our comfort zones and try something new. I’ve actually been trying to convince my husband that when we hit Halong Bay in Vietnam that since it’s already going to be so touristy that maybe we should just go big and do a full-on booze cruise!

Agreed they aren’t my normal style but it was quite entertaining! Careful on the Halong Bay Booze Cruise – I’ve heard nightmare stories of the cabins! Maybe start with a day booze cruise 🙂

I actually stayed on Isla Mujeres when I was there and loved it. We would see the boats come in with day travelers. Sounds like you had a great time.

We heard staying on Isla Mujeres was the way to go! On our cruise we got a quick 60 ish minutes to explore and it wasn’t enough time to enjoy the island!

Which company did you use for your booze cruise tour? Did you purchase in advance or negotiate the day of?
this was helpful.
