Preparing for a year of travel is fun, at times stressful, but mostly an adventure. We honestly don’t have much planned, we are keeping our schedule open, but we have spent hours upon hours reading, dreaming and figuring out logistics for our next year. We are sitting at the airport now and it is slowly becoming real.
Even after all that preparation, of course the first step of the process didn’t go as planned. We picked out our 36L packs specifically so we could carry them on. We cut down our clothes extensively and narrowed down our items to the bare essentials in order to fit everything in the overhead compartment. We even practiced traveling with them when we went to Ft. Lauderdale to ensure they would make it on the plane (which they did). Of course, the first agent checking us in today challenged the weight (which they were over by 2kg) and the size of the packs and insisted we were required to check them through. Luckily, it is a direct flight so there is not a high risk they won’t make it there and when does anything ever go as planned?
So as I said earlier, it was all fun and games until now, 30 min before we are boarding, our dreams of traveling the world becoming a reality! We are getting to board a plane to Hong Kong followed by 16 other destinations with no return ticket home (yet). My sister sent me a quote today:
“We are always getting ready to live, never living”
If you read the article linked above it discusses the act of endless preparation and never acting on your plans in fear of failure. Josh and I have planned our RTW trip quicker than most, giving up some of the time some use to prepare. I promise on this blog you will read about our failures and mishaps on the road, and not everything will be effortless, but I know that we are out there living.
