My husband is laughing at me and I quote:
“Caroline, we are already on an island, why do we have to go to a smaller island!”
While I do see his argument, photos like this are just too tempting to turn down.
The Gili Islands weren’t on our list a week ago, but after arriving in Bali and talking with some people, we’ve decided we can’t miss out.
The Gilis are comprised of three small islands: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. Gili Trawangan is known as the party island and is the largest. Gili Meno has a population of about 400 and is much quieter and secluded. There is an electricity generator and all of the fresh water is brought over from Lombok.
Gili Air (the island we will be visiting!), is a mixture between the two. They just got their first ATM (hooray!) December 2011. The island is known for their snorkeling and diving options and it is common to see turtles along the coral reef. There are no motor vehicles, cars or motorbikes allowed on any of the islands, only horse carts and bicycles. I am looking forward to not hearing horns honking or the whizzing around of motorbikes for a week.
We are staying at Ocean 5 Bunalows. It is known for its diving and snorkeling right off the beach and great diving classes. Hopefully I will get over my small fear of the ocean (and what is lurking under me) and try a fun dive!
