Josh and I fly a lot. We’ve developed personality types around what your airplane seat says about you.
This is supposed to be for fun, none of these are set in stone, so yes you may be a business traveler who loves to look out the window, and no you aren’t necessarily lazy just because you got stuck in the middle seat. These are our fun observations over our many flights. 🙂
Window Seat
You are most likely a leisure traveler. You are eager for your flight and will be staring out the window as the plane takes off and lands enjoying the views. You are excited and possibly nervous. You probably fly less than 10 times a year, regularly check baggage and carry some sort of pillow with you. There’s a 1 in 10 chance that this is your first flight ever. Of the row, you are the talker of the group, so if someone is going to start up a conversation it will be you. You don’t mind being at the end of the row because, after the drink service you will curl up against the plane, turn some music on and fall asleep. Not only do you rarely have to get up to use the bathroom, you actually get annoyed having to move for others, which is one of the main reasons you choose the window seat. You want to take advantage of everything the flight experience has to offer (headphones, lights, window shade, reclining the seat as soon as you hit 10,000 feet, etc.)
Do you put your whole head in front of the small window and block anyone else in the row from seeing, or do you sit back and awkwardly angle your neck so everyone else in your aisle can share the view? These are the questions that typically confront window seaters.
Drink Order: Diet Coke
Luggage choice: Checked your big luggage with a small carry on for your essentials
Aisle Seat
My guess is you travel often. You are one of the first checked into the airline and probably got to board early through one of the many airline programs you have status with. You’d normally be in first class, but you’re flying a different airline today. You can’t remember the last time you had to sit in the middle and your elbows are bruised from the beverage cart. You don’t like people telling you what to do. Once the plane is in flight your laptop is out and connected to wi-fi as you use the 3+ hour flight to get some work done. The flight is just a means of transportation to you, maybe even a weekly commute. Since you are used to taking long flights, you enjoy being able to get up and walk around or use the bathroom as needed, instead of feeling stuck at the end of the row.
Drink order: Glass of wine
Luggage choice: 4 wheel roller – carry on only
Middle Seat
You’re the most absent-minded and free spirt of the bunch. You probably booked your flight last minute and didn’t check in until you were at the airport a few hours ago. You rarely fly, because you hate it, because you always end up in the middle seat. Let’s be honest, no one enjoys sitting in the middle, but you are up for the fight to see who gets the arm rests. You don’t plan on sleeping during the flight, but you do have good book or movie to watch to pass the time.
Drink order: Coffee with cream and sugar
Luggage choice: Checked 2 large bags, carrying a backpack, personal item, duty free bag, and plastic bag with dinner from food court.

I’m a window seat guy, 100%. I’ve got an iron bladder and constantly have a kink in my neck after every flight from looking out the tiny misaligned window the entire time.
Caroline Eaton says
HA! Yes the neck kinks can be bad if you have a long flight!

i d prefer to sit in the aisle, simply cause i always need to go to the restroom 🙂

That’s my problem! When I want to get up and walk around or use the bathroom, I hate having to ask other people in the aisle. I’m an aisle seater!

What a fun post! I’m definitely a window seat person. For me, the flight is part of the trip and I want to enjoy it. I love to look out the window and daydream. I don’t want to talk to other people, but I will. And I check my bags because I don’t want to be bothered with them.
I’m usually a business traveler, but for me, sitting by the window makes me feel like it’s vacation.
Caroline Eaton says
I never thought of it that way – you are typically a business traveler, but to feel like you are on vacation and enjoy the trip a bit more you are a window seater… I Like! 🙂

I fly from the cockpit. What does that say about me?
Caroline Eaton says
… That you like to be in control… abide by your own rules and you want to have the best view of the flight… 🙂

Interesting! People on the aisle seats could also be tall people just trying to be more comfy. On Air Asia flights, for example, some people pre-booked their aisle seats (for an extra fee) so they can slide their legs into the aisle instead of cramming them into the tiny space in front.
